Kia ora,
Thank you for visiting my website. If you need help right now please go first to my emergency support page.
If you are curious about my training and who I am as a therapist, read on. I completed my training as a person-centred counsellor in 2015 graduating with a degree (level 7). Since then I have worked in private practice, in the men’s prison and with Deaf people. My on-going training has been mostly trauma related and has included cultural supervision. Completing my core-training in ISTDP in 2020 (Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy) was a significant achievement for me. It was a 3 year course during which 30 hours of my video-taped work with clients was reviewed by my supervisor. The ISTDP training has had a big impact on my therapy style and I can see how it has improved my ability to help people to understand themselves with accompanying gains in control, empathy and insight. To learn more about my training and details of therapy boundaries go to my therapy services page.
My main areas of work include individuals suffering with anxiety or depression, people from a trauma or abuse background, and the journey through grief and loss. I have a particular interest in anxiety and depression. My training can help you to notice patterns that, whilst once useful, may be hindering your potential to live fully and creatively. Real and on-going change is possible, and, it is important to say, that it takes hard work and commitment to therapy. Change most often occurs best in the live and dynamic process between a person and their therapist rather than in the intellectual discussion of psychology. In saying that a psychologically minded person will find information on general psychological concepts and tools for emotional regulation and other supporting information in my resources page.
I am fluent in NZSL which means I can work with Deaf without the need of an interpreter, if that’s what they want. Although I am not a daily user of NZSL I have enough skills to communicate well with any person whose first language is NZSL.
I welcome people from all walks of life. If you are ready to get started and want to book an appointment then contact me. Also use the contact me link if you have any questions. If you are thinking that therapy with me would be helpful and you’re wondering if you can afford it then please follow this link to find out about support with paying for therapy from WINZ.
It may help you to know that I am a climate-aware counsellor who understands the serious difficulties we face. I acknowledge the validity of climate science and the existential risks that poses to a planet supportive to life. I work consciously towards climate justice, to change our systems of uncare and to help bring about a more caring society. For more reading and information on climate psychology please go to this page . Your own troubles regarding climate breakdown may or may not feature in your therapy with me, that is, of course, up to you. I include this aspect of our lives, as human beings on this planet, as a way to help society grapple with a grim future and a changed normal. We all have a part to play, and our collective contributions matter. I also want to dispel any myths or theories that might be reinforced by omitting to acknowledge a changed world, which is the legacy of climate breakdown and that legacy will go on impacting our way of life for generations to come, who will bear no responsibility but all the sad consequences of our actions now.
